Supported Decision Making

Course Description:
Everyone has the right to make decisions about their life. Supported decision-making is the process of providing support to older people receiving care and services, to ensure that they can make, communicate and participate in decisions about their own lives.
This course explores what supported decision-making is and outlines how staff can implement strategies to ensure the older person is well-supported to make decisions that allow them to exercise choice and maintain control about how they live their life.
Learning Outcomes:
After completing this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain the key principles of decision-making
- Recognise what supported decision-making is
- Identify those who may require additional support with decision-making
- Describe the types of decisions that are typically made in the care setting
- Identify strategies to support decision-making, using a strengths-based approach
